Abstract

The first 4 chapters of this book deal with the classification, domestication and breeding of cultivars for different climatic regions, covering red, black and purple raspberries and blackberries. Hybrid and arctic berries are covered in chapter 5. Several subsequent chapters are devoted to Rubus cytogenetics and diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma-like organisms, pests and nematodes, plus various genetic disorders. In addition there are chapters dealing with general aspects of (1) the growth cycle, (2) stems, leaves and roots, (3) lateral branches and fruiting laterals, (4) flowers and fruit, and (5) pyrenes and seeds. The appendices include a list of origins of recently released cultivars and a gene list for Rubus. The volume is well presented, easily readible and comprehensively illustrated.
