Abstract

Red core (Phytophthora fragariae) severity was decreased, and yield and fruit size were maintained at economic levels, when conditions were favourable for good root growth. For protecting the roots, spraying in September with systemic fungicides (Aaterra Sanspor) [captafol] or Elvaron [dichlofluanid]) or non-systemic fungicides (Filex [propamocarb], Aliette [fosetyl-aluminium] or Ridomil [metalaxyl], was best. Yield and berry size were slightly improved by an additional spray in late March and application of 125 kg/ha nitrochalk in early March.
