Abstract

Mature perithecia of this fungus were found in June 1979 on fruiting canes 10-30 cm from the base and associated with water-soaked, black-brown vascular lesions some of which caused wilting and consequent loss in yield. This is a new record for Rubus spp. in the UK. It is suggested that, since there is no evidence of pathogenicity of S. depressula, climatic or edaphic factors either caused death of the canes or predisposed them to colonization by the fungus.
