Abstract

L. coniothyrium was evident on canes of Glen Isla in October following mechanical harvesting in August, while the pathogen was evident on Malling Jewel, Malting M and Glen Clova in November. In inoculation studies with these varieties grown under field conditions, cane lesions on Glen Isla were significantly larger than on the other varieties. In inoculation studies with Glen Clova and Malling Orion under greenhouse conditions, cane resistance increased from May until August, inoculations later than July inducing only small lesions and rarely causing bud failure.
