Abstract

(2-chloroethyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CCC or ‘Cycocel’) was sprayed on Talisman strawberry plants in May and again in July, following April planting. Runner formation was almost completely eliminated by two sprays of 4 per cent active chemical. This, or partial control by a single spray or by injection into the soil, increased yields of fruit in the following year by almost half compared with the yield from free-runnering plants, and was as effective as removing runners weekly by hand. Higher doses may be required for other varieties.
